MJ Conroy - Safetrak for Ladders

The Challenge

Based in Ireland, MJ Conroy work alongside many leading architectural and engineering firms carrying out construction, fit out refurbishments and maintenance work.

One of their clients, a specialist in manufacturing medical devices, has MJ Conroy staff working full time at their site in Ireland carrying out maintenance and construction work.

With more than 85 ladders at the site, MJ Conroy were finding it very time consuming performing ladder inspections and maintenance.

The Working at Height Regulations states that any item of equipment used for work at height must be fully inspected to ensure its safe use. Safetrak, part of the Brady Corporation’s SFID Division (Safety, Facilities and Identification), advises that external ladders need to be inspected at maximum intervals of 3 months and those used in other locations, at maximum intervals of 6 months.

With a large number of ladders onsite, the process of planning, inspecting and reporting inspections was very time consuming - particularly when completing the paper based forms. MJ Conroy decided they needed a more efficient and accurate solution.

The Solution

MJ Conroy turned to Safetrak, the digital system which helps you plan, inspect and report your equipment inspections and maintenance.

Safetrak

Using RFID or barcode technology, Safetrak guides operators to perform asset inspections using a handheld computer while the inspection plan and subsequent reports are managed on the office computer. Using Safetrak for Ladders, a module specifically designed to help you manage ladder inspections, MJ Conroy are now able to:

  • Track and control the locations of the ladder assets
  • Plan, perform and report ladder inspections
  • Minimise the time performing inspections
  • Comply with legislation
  • Produce efficient and accurate reports
  • Eliminate paper records to write duplicate or file away
  • Help protect the company against accidents and claims
  • Reduce human error.

The Results

MJ Conroy can now generate reports to show the ladder register, failed ladders, ladders due for inspection, the latest ladder inspections and the ladder inspections performance history.

While MJ Conroy initially used Safetrak at this site, they are now looking at implementing the system at other client sites to manage onsite equipment inspections and maintenance.

David Conroy, Director at MJ Conroy said: “The Safetrak system has been a great investment. “Before implementing the system it was easy to say that all of the ladders had been inspected when they might not have been – Safetrak has brought in more reliability.

“One of the best attributes of Safetrak is the reports that can be created at the touch of a button.
